Martin School Travels Around the WorldBy Holly SpohnMartin School is traveling around the world! This may not actually be the case, but each month a new country is being introduced to the students at Martin through many different activities! A local library has donated clothing and other artifacts to the school, which have been put on display in the hallway for the students to look at. Along with the artifacts, each day a new fact about each country is given to the students over the morning announcements. The principal, Donna Holtzman, has put together a passport for each student, which incorporates a writing activity each week. Donna describes the activities found in the passport over the morning announcements, and then the classroom teachers have their students do the activities. This is not only fun for the students, but incorporates the PA state standards and allows the students to walk away with new knowledge. The itinerant teachers found in art, music, and physical education are also playing a part. For each country, they introduce something within their subject area that may be found in each specific country. For example, in music a special instrument from Egypt may be used. In art, a mosaic may be created with different geometric shapes. Within physical education, an Egyptian game will be played. The activities change as the monthly countries do. To keep the students excited about their journey, in November an assembly presenting live animals from Egypt will enter Martin School. Animals that may be present include, a Baboon, a Vervet Monkey, a Egyptian Cobra, a Jungle Cat, a Jackal, an Egyptian Dog, a Mongoose, or a Nile Crocodile! |
