We are excited to announce our school’s participation in reading The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney. We are encouraging our entire school to read one book together over a 5 week period. There are so many proven benefits of reading to and with your child and we hope to show your child the joys of reading. This book is a short chapter book and we are asking that you read 3 chapters per week. Each chapter takes approximately 10 minutes to read. The book is intended to be read to and/or with students. Our intention is for this to be a time to connect with your child through literacy.
All of our children will receive a FREE copy of this book on Friday, January 7, 2022. Please do your best to adhere to the schedule, as our classroom teachers will engage in discussions and activities pertaining to this book. We will also have an opportunity for students to view/listen to local community members read these chapters during the school day in the event you are unable to read every chapter.
At the end of each week, we will provide a link for a Microsoft Form that includes an engaging activity, as well as a question for students to respond to. These are optional activities and not required. Students that submit pictures and responses will be put into a drawing to receive prizes! We also may digitally display some of the completed activities for the school community to view!
We hope you enjoy this book as much as we do!
You can learn a lot about life by observing other species. That's what Humphrey was told when he was first brought to Room 26. And boy, is it true! In addition to his classroom escapades, each weekend this amazing hamster gets to sleep over with a different student. Soon Humphrey learns to read, write, and even shoot rubber bands (only in self-defense). Humphrey's life would be perfect, if only the teacher wasn't out to get him!
